Our Story
In 1983 Debbie Rosas and Carlos AyaRosas shook up the fitness industry with their barefoot approach to exercise. They called their revolutionary, expressive fusion style the Nia Technique. Set to soul-stirring music, Nia combines dance, martial arts and mindfulness, toning your body while transforming your mind. Soon after, a handful of teachers began practicing Nia in Houston, offering classes at gyms, wellness facilities and the Texas Medical Center.
Black Belt Nia Trainer Helen Terry envisioned a dedicated Nia studio for Houston, eventually teaming up with Kristie Bryant, a Nia student and local entrepreneur. Together, they brought NiaMoves to the Houston Heights area, offering more regular Nia classes than any place in the world! NiaMoves became a center for movement practices and programming focused on finding joy, health and healing.
In April 2016, Studio NiaMoves began a new chapter in the story. Under the new ownership, the studio facility had a much needed refresh, and we realign our focus to feel good movement, fitness, and health. We continue to offer an impressive line-up of classes and workshops aimed at helping anyone who walks through our door feel good and feel better through movement and wellness. Somatic programming includes signature Nia classes, yoga, hooping and belly dance. Wellness options aimed at healing and good living encompass the Melt Technique, acupuncture, coaching, authentic relationship building and cooking workshops for healthy foodies! We have programs for just about everybody -- music lovers, free dancers, tots and moms! We offer a warm, inviting atmosphere dedicated to your best you! What are you waiting for? Step in!
